Healthy Ageing: How Good Food Can Support Independent Living
As we get older, everyday tasks such as shopping, meal planning and cooking can become more challenging. But eating well remains an important part of looking after our health, wellbeing and independence.
At Parsley Box, we believe that good food should be something to look forward to at every stage of life. That’s why we’re proud to be part of Mediaplanet’s Healthy Ageing campaign, featured in The Guardian, exploring the practical choices that can help people live healthy, confident and independent lives for longer.
Food for the belly and brain
Food should be enjoyable and comforting, as well as providing the nutrients our bodies need. As we age, however, changes in appetite can make it harder to eat enough of the foods that support our health.
“As we get older, our appetite can decline, which puts us at risk of muscle wastage,” says Holly McComb, CEO of Parsley Box. “We have to keep our protein up – which makes every mouthful matter.”
That’s why making meals enjoyable is so important. When food looks and tastes appealing, we're more likely to want to eat it, and familiar favourites can make mealtimes feel even more comforting.
“For example, the familiarity of a meal can be comforting and appealing,” Holly explains. “It’s a moment of connection with our past. We all have a story about a household favourite, like a cottage pie or lasagne. There’s a reason why these meals are our top sellers.”
Eating well to help maintain your independence
Healthy ageing isn't just about what we eat. It’s also about making everyday life manageable, so that we can continue doing the things we enjoy and living life on our own terms.
For some, shopping for ingredients, carrying heavy bags, planning meals or spending time cooking can become more difficult. Having convenient meal options available can help remove some of these everyday challenges.
“As we age, shopping, meal planning and cooking can become more difficult,” says Holly. “But enjoying good food should not.”
At Parsley Box, our meals are designed with convenience and independence in mind. They can be stored in the cupboard, don't require a fridge or freezer and are simple to prepare, meaning customers can have meals ready whenever they need them.
It’s not about taking away independence. It’s about making it easier to keep it.
Supporting customers, families and carers
The benefits of convenient meals can extend beyond the person enjoying them, too.
Family members and carers often want to make sure a loved one is eating well, but they can't always be there to shop, cook or prepare meals. Having meals readily available can take some of that pressure away, while still allowing customers to choose what they want to eat and when.
For families, that can mean one less thing to worry about. For customers, it means having the freedom to enjoy a meal at home without relying on someone else to prepare it.
Small changes can make a big difference
Supporting your health as you age doesn't have to mean making dramatic changes. Small, practical choices can add up over time.
“As we age, we should prioritise our protein, keep our fibre up and drink more water,” says Holly. “We always encourage people to add a side of vegetables to our meals for extra balance. Even small changes can make a big difference to our health and wellbeing.”
And it’s never too late to start.
