Elaine’s meal memories

I loved being a trainee nurse. You didn’t want to get on the wrong side of the ward sister, mind. I was lucky; she took a shine to me, and even once invited me to lunch in the staff canteen. It was the first time I’d tried lemon sponge pudding, so light, tangy, and just sweet enough. I remember thinking, “I’ll work hard enough to earn this every day”. And that’s just what I did.
