Eating, Drinking & Ageing Well
Maintaining a nutrient-rich diet is important for everyone, especially adults over the age of 65. However, with so much information available about healthy eating, it can often feel overwhelming to sort through it all and find what's truly relevant to your needs.
The British Dietetic Association has created a much-needed new resource that presents the latest evidence and delivers more age-appropriate guidance on food and nutrition for older adults.
Some of the key topics highlighted in the resource include maintaining a healthy body weight, meeting your changing nutritional needs as you age, the importance of vitamin D, staying well-hydrated, understanding realistic activity levels in relation to nutrition, and, most importantly, enjoying your food and eating in a way that works for you.
- Enjoyment of Eating & Drinking
Taking pleasure in food & drink can help you eat well and maintain your health.
- Weight
As you get older, maintaining your weight is vital to ensure you have enough energy to stay well, socialise and be active.
- Activity
Any amount of movement is a positive step in keeping your muscles, bones and joints strong.
- Vitamin D
Vitamin D supports bones, muscles and teeth, preserving strength and reducing the softening of bones.

The resource was put together with input from Friends of the Elderly and British Geriatrics Society, who recognised that a resource like this was much needed and enlisted the support of the University of Plymouth to review the latest dietetic evidence to support its creation.
As a service supporting older adults, we recognise that general healthy eating messages may not always be suitable for this age group. We are therefore very pleased that this valuable resource is now available to both the public and healthcare providers.
